2008 Mustache of the Year

Please cast your vote for 2008 Mustache of the Year by using the box on the right side of this page. Here are the nominees:

TONY

Shown here sporting the 'Upper Decker,' an original style of mustache invented for Mustache Day 2008 where he has removed the lower portion of hair, almost creating the illusion that the mustache is floating over his mouth or hanging from his nose.

ERIC

Shown here along I-95, he did not let the hard hat or cold weather prevent him form sporting the Flaming Fu-manchu. He has really rebounded nicely from his "to catch a predator" look from last year.

JOE

Like your favorite homemade recipe, Joe created this mustache from scratch. To the dismay of his girlfriend, he did not use a beard of goatee while growing it. That is a great acccomplishment, in particular for someone so young. Expect him to be a major contender for the next 15-30 years.

SCOTT

The defending champion from last year knows all about growing hair. With all the anticipated competition, this experienced professional tried something experimental this year. He toyed with the Fu-manchu (shown here) before deciding it looked too modern and normal and that he needed to go more old school. Catch him going old school at the happy hour celebration.

preparations

Part of the fun of Mustache Day is the preparation. You have weeks leading up to the main event where everyone can see what you are doing. You get plenty of comments, but my favorite is when people ask if you are trying to grow a beard. The reason I love this is two fold. First, its kind of a pointless question. I think to myself, hmm, there is hair on my face. So much so, that you noticed and asked if I were growing a beard. And isn't a beard some kind of facial hair? So isn't the answer obviously yes? Kind of like like calling someone to ask if they have a phone... The second reason I like the question is because it is an opportunity to let the world know you are actually growing a mustache, and that this beard is just to trick people while enhancing fun and hiding your secret.

It is these types of encounters that add to the excitment of shaving on Mustache Eve. Many participants like to phase the removal of hair. For instance, those with full beards will take liberty to try big chop sideburns or a bushy goatee. Or they may trim down into a type of chinstrap beard. Another common thing to do is to stop with a fu-mancu. And while some may stop at this point, others may continue the hair removal process and morph their mustache into some other special creation, maybe something you dont even know about.

And it all builds up to the point where you are finished. Some people ask what's the point? Or why do you do it? History, tradition, and respect are all correct answers. But if you want to know the truth, its largely selfish. When you put down the razor and look at yourself in the mirror, you smile. It is impossible not to; ask anyone who has participated. And this feeling of joy and happiness makes it all worthwhile.

Happy Mustache Day

The super bowl of facial hair is finally here- While walking into work this morning I crossed an intersection with a cop standing in the road directing traffic. He was helping celebrate, but definitely did a double take to look at me and my mustache.

Keep checking back for pictures of participants and to help crown a champion.

Mustache Day (Observed) 2008

In case you hadn't heard, Mustache Day is being observed on March 20, 2008. It officially falls on March 23 of every year. Hopefully your mustaches are in full effect, in anticipation of Thursday's celebration. We had a great turnout last year, and are hoping that this year will be even hairier!
